Roolf & Ostien Names

Ostien (spelled OstIEn, not Ostein) is pronounced like Austin, e.g. "AHH-stin" or "AWE-stin". According to Ostien family members in Germany, its original form may have been Ostgen, and may also have been related to an area in Italy of the same name from which the Ostiens may have originally come from. However, Ostien is a fairly unique name, even in Germany, and the Ostgen variant can also be found there.

Roolf is also a less common name, and also came from Germany, but whether it has origins there or elsewhere we do not know. Common variations on the spelling include Rolf and Rolfe.
