CRAMTON - FIELD

Served in the French and Indiana Wars of 1760 under Scranton's 5th
Company
Colonel Nathan Whiting, 2nd Connecticut Regiment 1760. He was at the
Battle of Bennington, August 16, 1780. Was a private Capt. John Allen's
Company, Col. Ethan Allen, Reg. Oct 12, 1780. Private Capt in Orange
Train's Comp., Col. Lee's Reg. to Nov 20, 1781. It was said of him: "Neri
Cramton was a bold and fearless soldier, and was with Ethan Allen's men at
Ticonderoga, May 10, 1775. When Burgoyne hand penetrated as far south as
Skeensburg, with a scouting party was taken prisoner. He had no way of
release but to take protection under Burgoyne. He returned home, and the
day before battle the Battle of Bennington, had proceeded with his family
as far as Arlington, on their way to Litchfield. Finding there was to be
a battle, he left his family their and went to Bennington to engage in the
affray. He was told that he was running a great risk, for if taken
prisoner he would be hanged. He said he would never again be taken alive.
He went into battle and fought bravely.
